The Sussexes kicked off their joint 2019 royal calendar with an action-packed away day to Merseyside in North West England on Monday. The soon-to-be parents carried out a busy day of engagements by visiting organizations to support people in the community, starting with a visit to the town’s Hamilton Square to meet veterans and unveil a plaque before visiting Tomorrow’s Women Wirral, an organization to help vulnerable women—an area Meghan Markle intends to focus on. Later on Monday, they will visit a youth organization called the Hive.

The duchess, showing off her growing baby bump, looked the picture of happiness, despite reports that she is “miserable” in her new role. US Weekly ran a story recently that claimed Meghan is struggling, while Prince Harry apparently feels guilty that he is not able to protect her.

There is no doubt that Meghan is going through a complicated transition and has had to deal with an ongoing rift with her father, Thomas Markle. There have also been a series of other family drama, including, most recently, the news that her half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., was arrested for drunk driving

But despite the ongoing family drama and rumors of a rift between her in-laws, Meghan is, according to friends, upbeat. A source who knows the couple has told Vanity Fair that the couple “couldn’t be happier” as they prepare for the birth of their first baby this spring, and that Meghan is “doing well.”

“They are very excited about the baby and moving into their new home,” the source adds. “They are actually very upbeat about everything, and Meg is doing really well. She doesn’t pay too much attention to the tabloids and what they say, and she tries to ignore any negativity.”

Harry, who often reads the press, is apparently still frustrated that he cannot do more to support Meghan from strife with her family and negative stories

Despite a joint show of togetherness over Christmas, Meghan and Harry were reportedly not at Anmer Hall, Prince William and Kate Middleton’s country house, for a celebratory weekend to ring in Kate’s 37th birthday earlier this month, which has led to renewed speculation of a fallout

Over the weekend, it was also reported that Meghan is allegedly losing another member of staff, her third to date. The news comes following the sudden departure of Meghan’s assistant and the imminent departure of the couple’s private secretary, Samantha Cohen, who has served at the Palace for 17 years. According to The Sunday Times, her chief protection officer, a woman who has been in the job for about six months, is leaving the royal household. It is understood that the bodyguard, who notably escorted the duchess out of a market in Fiji because of overcrowding, handed in her resignation because of the difficulties involved in protecting Meghan. “Meghan sees help as interference, and that’s becoming a problem,” says a source. “At the Palace, people are wondering aloud, ‘Who’ll be the next to leave?’”

As a member of the royal family, Meghan has a bodyguard at all times, something friends say she has struggled to get used to. As an actress, she often engaged with her fans and enjoyed getting to know them. Compared to other royals, Meghan is still hands on when it comes to meeting people. During her visit to Smart Works last week, she kissed and hugged charity representatives, and aides say she is reluctant to tone down her empathy

Today, she and Harry met members of the public at Hamilton Square, where Meghan was seen bending down to talk to a young fan, collecting bouquets, and accepting a teddy bear with Harry for their baby

Says a source: “Meghan doesn’t plan on changing who she is. She knows this is her new life. I’m not saying she’s miserable, but I think she sometimes feels constrained.”
